Letter to Editor: Sex education: Adopt comprehensive approach

Connie Schultz -- and the courageous students about whom she wrote in her column on Wednesday -- tells a story that is, for so many of Ohio's youngsters, the rule and not the exception. Many of us agree that "knowledge is power." Sadly, that expression's corollary is the dangerous reality for students systemically deprived of the important lessons that a comprehensive sex-education curriculum presents.

Earlier this week, nine witnesses -- among them a pediatrician, a minister, educators, student advocates and parents -- testified before the Education Committee of the Ohio House in support of the Act for Our Children's Future (HB 316). This legislation is about giving young people the knowledge they need to make responsible decisions. It aims to educate, inform and, ultimately, empower our children by providing them with the medically accurate and widely proven educational resources they need.

The Coalition for Family Health -- the statewide assembly convened by the National Council of Jewish Women -- urges state lawmakers to promptly pass this legislation.
